Kalamazoo County, Michigan, is entering a state of emergency after high levels of polyfluoroalkyl chemicals were found in local drinking supplies. This runs serious health risks, including cancer, on those in the area.
The state of emergency was called by Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley on Sunday, approximately five days after a test from Parchment and Cooper Township water supplies returned with a level of 1,410 parts per trillion (ppt) of PFAS, 20 times more than the EPA lifetime health advisory limit of 70 ppt. These two towns have an approximate total of 4,900 residents.
Utility companies have been flushing the water lines in Parchment, while water is being distributed out to those in the area. Residents are advised not to drink any of the water at this time.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, PFAS can result in such risks as low infant birth weights, weakened immune system, cancer, and hormone disruption. Boiling water WILL NOT remove the chemicals from water. You’ll need a reverse osmosis water filtration system to safely remove PFAS. We recommend the Express Water 50 GDP filter.
This is exactly why preppers invest in quality water filtration units. Water is such an essential in life and we often take the infrastructure’s supply for granted. Finding a safe and self-sufficient supply of water can make a world of difference.
