Each Thanksgiving, our county partakes in a tradition that, while it sounds very political, isn’t. The current president of the United States pardons two turkeys. This year, president Trump pardoned two turkeys named Peas and Carrots. But he struck a negative chord with various citizens when he made a number of politically charged jokes.
It began with Trump stating that while both turkeys were being pardoned, Peas was the winner of a “fair and open election” to vote for which turkey should be the winner. It was followed by this.
“Unfortunately, Carrots refused to concede and demanded a recount, and we’re still fighting with Carrots. I will tell you we’ve come to a conclusion. Carrots, I’m sorry to tell you the result did not change.”
Given the recent complications in the Georga/Florida elections, many of the local voters found this disrespectful. Though most individuals were more upset by his next joke.
“Even though Peas and Carrots have received a presidential pardon, I have warned them that House Democrats are likely to issue them both subpoenas.”
Were these remarks funny or offensive? In the end, that’s for you, the listener, to decide. So far, the overall reception has been a negative one.
